Learning Institute Aims to Focus Educators on Equity

UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools, Orange County Department of Education and Butte County Office of Education host Professional Learning Institute Exploring California’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
More than 2,500 educators and community members are expected to participate in the 3rdannual California Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Professional Learning Institute in Long Beach, California, July 29-31 at the Long Beach Convention Center. (https://bit.ly/2COgAxa) The purpose of the institute is to engage educators and others in learning about California’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports Framework and how it can further equity for all students. Participants will also learn about the California Department of Education’s School Conditions and Climate Work Group Recommendation Framework.
Hosted by the Orange County Department of Education, Butte County Office of Education, and the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools, the theme of the institute is “All Means All – Know My Name, Face, and Story.” Participants will engage in 3 days of professional learning exploring strategies to further access and equity for all students, linkages between deep learning, instruction and the Multi-Tiered System of Supports frameworks, and how to implement the CA Multi-Tiered System of Supports framework to create equitable and inclusive learning environments. Institute sessions will offer participants the opportunity to discuss relevant new research around school culture, climate, discipline and its connection to MTSS implementation. Those attending will also have the opportunity to learn from practitioners across the state how they are successfully creating positive school conditions and a climate that ensures everyone in the school community feels socially, emotionally, and physically safe, supported, connected, and engaged in learning and teaching.
California State Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond will present the opening keynote session on Monday July 29. Joining Darling-Hammond in the opening keynote general session are Victor Rios, Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara; Huda Essa, Founder of Culture Links, Diversity and Equity; and, Kristin Wright, Director of the Special Education Division for the California Department of Education. The California Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Professional Learning Instituteis part of an ongoing collaboration between the Orange County Department of Education, the Butte County Office of Education, and the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools to expand the California Multi- Tiered System of Supports framework, which aims to address the academic, behavioral and social needs of students statewide. Funding for the Institute and the partnership is provided by a grant from the California Department of Education.
